Chapter 5

5

Arjuna Uvacha :

Of renunciation of actions, Krishna !

Then again of Yoga you praise;

Which is the one superior of the two,

That to me tell with certitude.

Sri Bhagavan Uvacha :

Renunciation and Karma Yoga,

Both lead to final happiness;

But of the two, than abdication of action,

Karma Yoga is distinctive.

Known is he as a regular saint,

who neither hates nor yearns;

Freed from duality, indeed, Arjuna,

Easily from bondage is he freed.

“Sankhya and Yoga are different”, so say the immature;

Not so the wise;

Even (if) in one, when established firmly,

Of the both, he begets the benefits.

That state which the Sankhyas attain,

that the Yogis too reach;

As one – Sankhya and Yoga-

He that sees, he sees.

Renunciation, but, O Arjuna,

is hard to attain without Yoga;

Entrenched in Yoga, that Muni,

The Brahmic State soon attains.

Entrenched in Yoga, that pure soul,

having won over the self and conquered the senses;

Regards the self of all beings as the self within,

though he acts, action does not turn into a rut.

“Never do I do anything”

so the unified being should believe, so too the knower;

when engaged in seeing, hearing, touching or smelling,

ating, moving, dreaming or breathing,

talking, excreting or bearing,

opening wide or shutting down the eyelids;

when the senses, in the sensual, wander,

then too conduct yourself thus.

Dedicating all actions to the Brahman,

And with detachment he who performs;

Burdened not is he by sins,

As the lotus leaf by the water is not.

With the body, mind, intellect as also with the senses,

Yogis merely engage in activities, shunning attachment

enabling self purification.

The one ensconced in the Self , un-focussed on the fruits of action,

Peace he attains that ensues from God realisation.

The one not steadfast, swayed by desire,

Obsessed with the outcome, is caught up in a maze.

Retracting an obsessive mind from all actions,

The one that is in such control exists happily.

This physical body of nine vents,

Neither performs nor causes to perform.

Neither authorship nor actions in this world

Are created by the Lord,

So also any association of results to action.

It is all an innate natural process.

The Omnipresent Lord neither shares one’s sins

Nor his good deeds.

Intellect is blurred by ignorance

And therefore beings delude themselves.

That ignorance through awareness of the Self is erased.

And their knowledge, like the sun, radiates Supremacy.

Those intellects, those souls, those steadfast beings, those seekers,

With their knowledge purged of confusions, reach a state of no return.

Abounding in learning and humility, that Brahman

Perceives a cow, an elephant, a dog as also an out-cast

or a scholar just the same.

Even here in this entire world,

They are victorious whose mind is equipoised;

San defects and on par with Brahma,

They have attained a Brahmanic state.

Neither rejoicing in conducive situations,

Nor perturbed by adversities,

Of a stable disposition and undeluded,

This knower of the Brahma, is in a Brahmanic state.

Detached from external sensations,

Deriving joy from within,

Through practice he, that is ensconced in Brahma,

Experiences endless joy.

The pleasures that emanate from sensations,

Bring forth only sorrow.

These are bound by a commencement and a conclusion,

Arujuna, the wise do not indulge in these.

It is possible in this world, while still living in this body :

Countering the urges arising from lust and anger,

This unified being is a happy man.

He who is joyous inside,

Rejoices in himself and shines from within,

Such an Yogi attains absolute liberation

And a state of Brahma-Being.

Those sages attain absolute liberation

Who are devoid of delusions,

With the distinction between God and man cast off,

And rejoicing in the welfare of others.

Free of lust and anger,

The spiritual seeker, the self controlled

The one who has experienced the self

Lives in constant liberation.

Distancing from external sensory contacts,

Focus on the glabella and the nasal flow,

Stabilising the inhalation and exhalation….

…Training the senses, the mind and the intellect,

That sage, the seeker of liberation,

He that is always free from desires, fear and anger,

He indeed is free.

Enjoyer of  the benefits of sacrifice and austerity

Cordial towards all beings,

Knowing me thus as the Lord of the entire universe,

Such a one experiences peace.
